Colorado Abortion Statistics

Colorado Abortion Statistics

The statistics below are the latest available from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The Department reports that "A study by the Health Statistics Section in 1985 revealed that a possible 30 percent of terminations in the state were not reported. Given the likelihood of under reporting…the ratio of terminations per 1,000 live births would probably be higher with more complete reporting."

In 1999, the following was said about under reporting:

Colorado abortion facilities are failing to report thousands of abortions a year to the state health department….

Though regulations call for abortion facilities to report every abortion to state government, many don't.

In 1996, the most recent year for which figures were available, abortion facilities told the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment they performed 9710 abortions. But that same year, a private research group contacted Colorado abortion facilities and concluded there actually were 18,310 abortions in the state, or almost twice as many as the state government knew about.

Only three other states – Maryland, Nevada and New Jersey – had a worse record of abortion reporting, according to the study by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion New York group that is the research arm of Planned Parenthood.

State officials said they long have known their abortion records are incomplete.

"Yes, there is under reporting of abortion. How much there is, or why it happens, we just don't know," said Carol Garrett, director of health statistics for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. "The difference between our numbers and Guttmacher's numbers is pretty compelling."

These figures, then, are well below the actual numbers.

Child abuse, said the abortion advocates in the 1960's and 70's, would decrease dramatically once abortion became legal and every child was "wanted." But child abuse increased 331 percent in the United States between 1976 and 1992 – after abortion became legal. (US Dept. of Health, Centers for Disease Control)
